Jaylen Thomas runs through the defensive line

Former Carrollton High School football standout Jaylan Thomas was recognized for his stellar freshman campaign at Elon last week by being named the Colonial Athletic Association’s Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Thomas emerged as the Phoenix’s starting running back midseason, racking up 723 yards rushing on 7.3 yards per carry, 71 receiving yards on seven receptions and five touchdowns total.

The former Trojan’s peak performance came on Nov. 3, where he earned CAA Offensive Player of the Week honors by exploding for 222 yards and a touchdown in Elon’s 24-21 win over Rhode Island.

He became the program’s second straight gridiron newcomer to be named the conference’s offensive rookie of the year after quarterback Davis Cheek took home the award in 2017.
